Mania and the Support Network
Current mood: awake
Category: Life

For me too much sleep is a red flag and not enough sleep is a red flag. They are two sides of the same coin. Knowing my red flags and having a strategy to deal with them help me to feel cognitively like I have some control over what's going on, even if emotionally I don't always feel like I do.

Having a good support network that is knowledgeable about your diagnosis is essential.

I you were diabetic, you would want your support network to know the symptoms of hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar and what to do.

In a similar vein, if you were talking way to much, way too loud for way too long. Staying up all night starting many different projects, but not finishing any of them. Having difficulty concentrating, making impulsive decisions which others feel show poor judgement, increased physical activity of any kind resulting in dramatic weight loss within a short period of time. Having really big mood swings, feeling grandiouse and/or very irritable, chances are you are having a manic or hypomanic episode.

Because I have been in treatment for a long time, I have some pretty good coping strategies to help slow me down when I'm going too fast, and cheer me up when I'm feeling really low. I will call my doctor without reservation when I can't get my sleep cycle back on track.I will also call my doctor if there is any persistant suicidal ideation that I can't get a handle on. If you are a beginner at managing your moods, you best run things by your psychiatrist until you have established a concrete action plan. Ask questions of your mental health person if you have any doubts. It's always better to be safe. Get feedback from another adult whose judgement you trust to help you know if your mood is getting too elevated. I am not always the best judge of my mood when I am hypomanic, but there are people I trust to tell me that my moods are extreme and to help me get hooked up with my doctor.

Rockygirlcat's Guidelines for Good Sleep Hygiene

Avoid consumption of caffeine after 5:00 p.m.

Use your bed only for sleeping, so it is not associated with other activities like reading or watching TV.

Keep a regular sleep schedule. Go to sleep  and wake up at the same time each day.

Perform vigorous exercise prior to 6:00 pm if this interferes with your ability to fall asleep at night.

Resist napping if it interferes with your ability to fall asleep at night.

Consume fluids prior to 7:00 pm if using the bathroom at night interferes with your ability to fall back asleep.

Avoid engaging in exciting activities or reading materials close to bed time if they interfere with your ability to fall asleep.

Take a warm shower before going to bed. This can help you to fall asleep. A dropping body temperature is associated with falling asleep more easily.

Drink a warm glass of milk before bed. This can help you to fall asleep.

Keep a pen and paper next to your bed. If you are worried about forgetting a task, write it down. This will decrease worrying about things you need to do the next day.

If you are unable to sleep, or are having any sleep disturbance for more than 3 days, consult your health professional for assistance. Especially if the sleep disturbance is accompanied by racing thoughts, excessive verbal activities and/or pressure of speech, irritability or emotional lability.

Rockygirlcat uses her support network to cope with stress and problematic sleep disturbances. It is important to know your red flag symptoms and have a game plan to minimize the negative impact they have on your overall functioning.

No One Owns A Cat

Cats Are Free

People are of the mind that they can own a Cat, but that is never the case. They may delude themselves into thinking that this is so, because they buy the food and pay the rent and so on and so forth. But that doesn't make one wit of a difference. Because, there isn't a creature ever made or born that can ever, ever own a Cat.

Cats Own People

On the other hand, or paw, if I may say so...Cats can own a person, or more than one person. Cats can own whole families, or entire casts of musical casts. This is because of the Cat's innate sense of character and charm. All creatures seem to want to cater to the Cat, to please him or her, to be close to him or her. There can be only one answer for this, and that is ANIMAL MAGNETISM.

How did the Cat become such a Magnetic Personality?

They say it started in the stone age when animals were fighting tooth and nail for food. The cat being the charming animal it is, simply charmed it's way into obtaining food, rather than fighting. After many generations or breeding, this trait soon developed into what is now known as the Super Charmer Kittens. And these are the modern day cats we see and worship today.

Getting Better

Today was the first day since I started my phenobarbital that I had no seizures. It was the highlight of the week. I was very happy and also getting my energy back. I ran up and down the hall and was able to jump up on my many perches that are situated around the house so I can look out of the windows. I also still have my purr intact and can purr at will. This makes my Mom and Dad very happy. I truly feel like the princess in my new Princess Picture with the crown and the sparkles. Today was definitely a sparkly kind of day. So many people have been very kind and concerned about my health. I want to thank everyone who has written, called and emailed me and my family regarding my health. It has been such a comfort to all of us. Things are looking up and I am hopeful that I will get the seizures under control.

Found My Purr

I am getting better. Today I only had one seizure and I am feeling more alert. For a while I lost my Purr, but today I got it back in time to Purr for my Mom for Mother's Day. That made her soooo Happy! I actually Purred twice today after not purring for almost 1 week. I hope you like my new picture that my Mom made for me. It makes me feel really pretty, and that's important for a girl cat.

Seizures

I am doing better. I only had two small seizures yesterday and two this morning. I am now only on one medication, which is Phenobarbital. It makes me sleepy and a little uncoordinated, but I am hoping this medicine will work. I keep trying to get up to high places around the house, so I can see out the windows, but my Mom will only let me go up on my perches with supervision. She is afraid I may have a seizure when I am up high and I may fall down and hurt myself.

I thank you all for your prayers and healing energy. I will continue to think positive about stopping the seizures.

Much Aloha from Honolulu,

Seizure Strikes Rockygirlcat

Early yesterday morning Rockygirlcat was struck with a tonic clonic seizure. While the seizure only lasted 2-3 minutes, it seemed like it went on for hours. Her Mom was with her at the time and helped her regain her equilibrium and calm her after the ordeal. It was a frightening experience for poor Rockygirlcat who woke up disoriented and confused. Mom stroked her and reassured her during the seizure that everything would be alright. Within 5-10 minutes after the seizure, Rockygirlcat was back to normal, meowing and asking for breakfast.

The trip to the vet was NOT FUN for Rockygirlcat who hates to ride in the car not to mention riding in the cat carrier. She however was a model patient, cooperating with the Vet and Vet Technicians. She needed to give blood for a lab test, which thankfully turned out normal. The doctor prescribed an antibiotic in case the seizures were being caused by a low grade infection. She also prescribed something for Rockygirl's tummy, and Valium to help stop the seizures.

Seizures in cats are considered an emergency situation and they should be taken to the Vet right away. It is the same as for people. Epilepsy is rare in cats being more commonly seen in dogs. Seizures may be caused by toxins or secondary symptoms of other medical problems. We are logging Rockygirlcat's symptoms to determine whether or not the seizures are in need of long term medication therapy. If Rockygirl continues to have frequent seizures, the doctor may put her on Phenobarbital rather than intermittent use of Valium. We are hoping that she will not need to be on long term medications and that the seizures will resolve.

We need to watch Rockygirlcat very carefully right now because she is unsteady on her feet due to the Valium. Her gait and her coordination are not as precise as they were before she started the medication. Mom watches that she doesn't try to jump up on high places where she might slip and fall. Tonight, Rockygirlcat will sleep in the bedroom with her parents and a child gate on the door to insure that she doesn't roam the house at night jumping up on high perches.

We ask that all of you Rockygirlcat friends send her healing positive energy to help resolve her seizures. We would so much appreciate this act of Aloha.

With Sincerest Thanks,
Mother of Rockygirlcat

Remember Eight Belles

Today a young filly Eight Belles ran to her death at the Kentucky Derby. She was euthanized after running her race and placing second. The cost of this win was two broken front ankles.

Horse racing is not for the benefit of the animals. Many horses are injured and euthanized due to serious injuries incurred by racing. Furthermore, these animals who are forced to race under dangerous conditions are given no choice in the matter. They exist merely for the financial amusement and entertainment of owners and gamblers.

A life is a life. Pain and injury are still pain and injury whether to human or animal. My heart breaks that a life was taken from us today. There is an aching in my chest that is filled with grief and anger. How senseless this death, how painful the loss of a beautiful horse. If horse racing had been banned one week ago, Eight Belles would still be alive today. I hope where ever she is, she is in a better place.

Happy Cats

jpeg_filename_Eagle1 Happy cats walk with their tails straight up in the air. Chins held high and proud. The tail sways gently from side to side as the cat walks or saunters along the path which pleases him or her the most. When hunting the tail is held low to the ground, while the cat creeps forward, belly close to the ground. When angry the tail is low to the ground, swishing many times from side to side as if to emphasize a point. When alarmed, the tail may be many times it's normal size, fluffy with a slight raised arch of fur along the back. When extremely frightened, the whole body takes on a dandelion in bloom quality, and the cat appears many times it's normal size.

As for me. My cat is a happy cat, her tail is almost always held high, with a gentle rhythmic sway. She is so graceful and agile. Poetry in motion was never so truly spoken as when my darling walks down her very own feline path.

Puddie Ball

Today Mom and I played a new game called Puddie Ball. It is played in the bathroom, using rugs, four walls the bathroom floor and a ping pong ball. The ball can be bounced off of any surface including the rumpled up rugs. I like to wrestle with the rugs, so old ones are advised for this sport. The game is named Puddie Ball, like Hand Ball, because in our house, paws are called puddies. This was taken from the term Puddie Tat like our well loved and well known Sylvester the Cat.

The ball flew fast and furious this morning. Mom really went for it, diving behind the toilet. For a while I thought we were going to have a flood, but fortunately, old faithful held on. I rolled for a save and scored the final Aloha Ball Point. Whoopee!!! My tries to play with me every morning and during the day too. She is happy with this new game because it gives me a choice. In or Out of the tub gaming. How cool is that?

This is the Ping Pong Puddie Queen Rockygirlcat signing off from beautiful Nuuanu/Liliha Hawaii.

Animal of the Week: The Kinkajou

The Kinkajou is a nocturnal animal that lives in the tree tops of tropical forests between Southern Mexico and Southern Brazil. They eat fruit and insects and during the dry season can be seen eating flowers for their nectar. The Kinkajou is 1.5 feet in length with an 18 inch prehensile tail and weighs approximately 6.5 pounds. They are one of the most commonly seen animals in the tropical forest and can be seen moving very rapidly, leaping from tree top to tree top. A flashlight shone into the canopy can reveal their eye shine which can be seen for great distances. The Kinkajou can live up to 23 years.

My Dad

Every afternoon my Dad comes home on his bicycle. This is because my Mom has to get Popo off the Handivan because she might get lost coming down the driveway. My Popo has Alzheimer's Disease. She is my Dad's Mom.

My Dad gets off his bike and comes running up the stairs. He takes off his backpack and comes looking for me. He carries me around the house, then gives me a soft food treat before he starts cooking. My Dad is the Chef of the house. My Mom hardly ever cooks, almost never. She is a vegetarian and me and my Dad are not, but Dad still cooks for her anyway. There's no accounting for people's tastes I guess.

My Dad always tells me how his day went and how much he missed me. It makes me feel very important. I purr and listen very carefully. sometimes if I'm really good, my Dad will take me for a special walk before or after dinner. This doesn't happen all of the time because my Dad is tired after work. My Dad carries 2 pictures of me in his wallet. One with only fur and one with my green Muu Muu that matches my eyes. Well I guess that's all for now.

Aloha,

The Big Wedding

The Wedding of Pola and Heather was fantastic. Friends and family crowded the old cottage and gathered round the couple as they took their wedding vows. The Bride was radiant, the Groom was humble as usual and very proud. Reverend Rudolf did the ceremony which was simple and short. Afterwards, a buffet style lunch was held, catered by the Kung Fu Support Forces Catering team. The couple danced to the music of the Alaskan Waltz. The couple hope to stay in Hawaii for a few more years, then relocate to Alaska, where Pola has family. Best of luck to both of them!

Animal of the Week

The animal of the week is the Pangolin. A mammal with no teeth, but a very long tongue, that likes to eat termites and insects. It’s body is covered with armor plates and it looks like a cross between an armadillo and an ant eater. They have really sweet faces and walk on their hind legs, with the from paws being reserved for digging ant nests and foraging for food. There are three types of Pangolin. The tree, ground and the giant Pangolin. There are Pangolin from all different countries, like there is an Indian Pangolin, Malayan Pangolin, Chinese Pangolin. Like they are all over. I hope I can put in some pictures because they are really cute. They are shy and will curl up when feeling threatened. They seem to be quite sweet animals, though I’m sure the ants and termites don’t think so.

Signing off for now,Cat face

Talking about Daily Routine

Quote

Daily Routine
Every morning I get up and help my parents get ready for work. My Mom drops off my Dad at work, then comes home.
After Mom gets home, I get brushed to help prevent hairballs. I have medium length fur. This takes about 10 minutes. After brushing I get a soft food treat.

The next event is the morning walk. My Mom walks me on a leash outside. We go walking every morning and afternoon. Along the way we feed the birds.

After our morning walk, we have morning chores, then quiet time. I usually nap while Mom reads. At about 12:00 we have lunch.

After lunch we finish up morning chores then do our afternoon walk. I like to chase lizards and birds. I catch them, but my mom makes me let them go.

At 2:30 pm I get my teeth brushed, then get a soft food treat. Sometimes I get to go out again before dinner. If I come into the house when I am asked, without resistance, I get a treat of Greenies. They are this really good treat and very crunchy.

We eat dinner about 6:00 pm and go to sleep between 9-10:00 pm. We get up early to go to work. A Cat's life is very busy and full of things to do. None of this sleeping for 18 hours business for me! I'm always on the go. I'm lucky if I get 1 nap a day!
